This Max/MSP patches full name, N_Sq_Sw_FORMANT SYNTH, is derrived, as you might imagine, from the three oscillators available to the user; Noise, Square-wave, and Saw-tooth. The patch started life as an experiment into vocal synthesis, using formant filters to create vowel sounds. This idea was based on a method published by Eduardo Miranda in his book ' Computer Sound Design'; which was a great source of research and inspiration during my degree.
The method used an excitation source & resonating cavity subractive synthesis technique to form the vocal formants. My FORMANT SYNTH patch involves an interface for continuously controlling the frequencies, amplitudes & band-widths of these formants.
This patch was designed for my Human/Computer Collaboration module, to work with various algorithmic composition patches.
