This is the WAVE_SHAPER patch. A Max/MSP synthsizer that uses an extension to the phase-distortion synthesis method, developed by CASIO, and researched in the excellent book, ' The Computer Music Tutorial' by Curtis Roads.
The idea behind the synth, is to use a short audio buffer as a lookup table for a conventional waveform oscillator. The original Casio 'P-D' method read a sine wave in two separate stages, at different speeds; causing a deformation of the wave (see Powerpoint document for details). The WAVE_SHAPER synth has its own 5 control-point buffer-maker to make complex lookup tables, which can be crossfaded to drive sine & variable-triangle oscillators for continuously variable timbres.
This patch was designed for my Human/Computer Collaboration module, to work with various algorithmic composition patches.
